Is he obedience trained, at least through Novice level obedience? If not, get that done too. The stand-for-exam, the down and the sit are very good aids in helping the grooming effort.

My mom uses a regular fine brush on her Pom's,just a soft human hair brush.If you mean strokes yes front to back,go with the hair not aganst it.

I am sad that the breeder of your dog (I assume you bought from a breeder, not a pet shop) failed to teach you that.

I bred, trained showed Afghan Hounds and other breeds (long and short coats) for many years.

If there is not a kennel club in your area that gives "groom, show, and train" classes in your area, you might try contacting a professional groomer and asking if he/she will teach you.

If all that fails, go to lilbrary or book store and get book on Poms ( they are darling dogs).
